Resilience through Neurofeedback

It has been a little over a year since I began my new adventure in providing neurofeedback training. Currently I am working with a nice mix of children, teens, and adults with problems like Developmental Trauma, migraines, seizures, anxiety/depression, AD/HD, and sleep issues. In the past year many have reported positive results from neurofeedback training because they have taught their brains to self regulate and to be more resilient.

Neurofeedback is a software interface which allows the user, or client, to observe their brain as an avatar in a computer game. Brainwave frequencies, or the EEG, is relayed to the software interface by silver sensors placed on the scalp and earlobe(s). The neurofeedback game uses operant and classical conditioning to reward the brain with points and graphics on the game when the user learns to alter their own EEG to improve self regulation of the brain waves and brain state. What I love about neurofeedback is watching the transformative process happening for clients. Better brain states leads to better overall functioning.

Over the year I have been lucky to hear stories about brains self regulating to avoid migraines and seizures, helping with teaching brains to stabilize against suicidal ideation, and watching clients open doors for themselves in terms of handling stressful or painful situations with a relaxed and open manner all the while advocating for themselves and feeling deserving of better outcomes. I heard the best thing this morning, which inspired me to write this blog: "I feel like I can handle things. I feel more self confident to make decisions." It has been a transformative year!
